An 18-year-old Han Chiang College student has created history as she became the champion for the 1st U-Voice National University Singing Competition.
Winner Hee Lee Joyce, who is studying for a Diploma in Mass Communication, walked away with a cash prize worth RM1,000 and a trophy.
Hee said that she did not expect to be crowned the champion when she first signed up.
“I have been taking part in different kinds of singing competitions since I was young,” said Hee adding that one of the competitions that she joined was Astro Star Quest.
She has always loved singing and with her natural talent, Hee has been attending vocal training lessons since she was 6 years old.
The student explained that although it is not easy to master various singing techniques, her passion has driven her to strive even harder and to courageously face any difficulties.
Hee revealed that her love for music is inherited from her father, a guitarist, who constantly inspires and encourages her to pursue her passion in singing.
She said that while most people often assume that hitting a high note is good singing; in fact it is not always the case.
“One of the judges told me that good singing is not about singing high notes, but singing a song with feelings and breathing emotions into the lyrics,” Hee added.
Asked whether she will continue to take singing to the next level, she firmly replied that she is determined to make singing her career if the right opportunity comes along.
At the mean time, Hee plans to participate in as many singing competitions as possible to help sharpen her skills. She hopes to give her best to everyone who has supported her, and to make Han Chiang College proud.
